Your LASIK Procedure

LASIK is a same day procedure-you'll probably be in and out of the surgical facility within a couple of hours. Dr. Buzard will let you know about any special preparations for surgery. You will need to arrange for a ride to and from the surgery since we will be giving you medicines which may impair your ability to drive. On the morning of surgery, try not to eat anything heavy which is likely to upset your stomach. Avoid dairy products. Tea or coffee and toast is a good suggestion. Take a good bath or shower and wash your hair. Soak your eyes with a warm washcloth for at least 10 minutes and lightly scrub your eyelashes and eyelids to remove any debris which may be present. Wear loose comfortable clothing, pants are preferred for women, avoid clothing which is tight or may constrict around the chest area. For women, avoid makeup of any kind. All patients should avoid products that are scented, such as perfume or aftershave, since scent can affect the functioning of the laser.

Before Surgery

You'll need to sign a consent form indicating that you understand the risks and complications of your surgery. Before surgery, your eye(s) will be numbed, with eye drops. You may also be given a sedative to help you relax. Dr. Buzard is likely to perform surgery on both eyes at the same time. You will be asked to wash your face and lightly scrub your eyelashes and eyelids with an antibacterial soap to remove any debris which may be present. We have provided chairs which massage you and you should take advantage of the time before surgery to relax.

During Surgery

Although you'll be awake during the surgery, your eye(s) will be numb so you'll feel no pain. Dr. Buzard will mark your cornea and use the microkeratome to create the flap. You will then be rotated under the laser and the laser part of the procedure will be performed. After the laser sculpting has been completed, Dr Buzard will examine the resection and return the flap to its original position. The flap will dry in place for several minutes and usually no patch will be used!

Going Home

When you go home shortly after surgery, you will be wearing a protective shield over your eye(s). It is extremely important not to move your eyes excessively for the remainder of the day. Since you won't be able to drive, be sure to arrange a ride or we will arrange a ride for you. You'll be given detailed instructions before you leave the surgery center on what to expect for the remainder of the day.
