Dr. Buzard Nominated for 2003 International Blindness Prevention Award
Each year, the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) accepts nominations for their International Blindness Prevention award. This award is presented to physicians who have unerringly demonstrated their concern for the patient and commitment to the treatment of eye disorders and diseases.
Nominations for this prestigious acknowledgement are all the more telling of the physician's standing and regard by nature of their source; for the physician must be nominated by a peer.
This year, Dr. Marietta Nelson of the Eye Clinic of Las Vegas, has nominated Dr. Buzard to receive this honor, citing an incident that occurred back in 1987, when Dr. Nelson first arrived in Las Vegas and Dr. Buzard was the only cornea specialist in Las Vegas.
This case involved a homeless person with no source of income who went to Dr. Nelson for help with a "significant corneal ulcer in the visual axis." Dr. Nelson states:
"I admitted him to the hospital for hourly fortified antibiotics and contacted Dr. Buzard, even though I did not know him. I asked him to consult on this patient, and he began to see the patient twice a day. Eventually, he did several procedures on the patient, restoring excellent vision,...he reassured me, 'Marietta, please don't ever hesitate to call me. I will see any patient that you would like me to see.' And over the past 15 years he certainly has."
