Dr. Buzard Asked to Speak at Scripps Clinic in California Dr. Buzard invited as guest faculty "Pearls of Ocular Therapy Speaker" 04\01\01 -- Dr. Buzard has been invited to join two other renowned ophthalmologists in June of 2001to speak on two subjects as guest faculty at the Valerie Timken Amphitheatre at the prestigious Scripps Clinic in California. Lecture Subjects The first lecture is a discussion on refractive phacoemulsification, centering on methods and techniques used to obtain 20/40 or better visual acuity in the majority of cataract and clear lensectomy patients. Dr. Buzard is a pioneer in this area evidenced by his newly published book The Blue Line Incision and Refractive Phacoemulsification. The second subject area is the current state-of-the-art in penetrating keratoplasty. This lecture will discuss various techniques used in an attempt to achieve a refractive result, including the use or torque/antique sutures and the use of additional sutures in the first year postoperative to improve visual rehabilitation and post suture removal techniques including LASIK, wedge resections and relaxing incisions.

Our concepts regarding ocular therapy are ever changing, and are influenced by our successes and our failures. As ophthalmologists, we refine our therapeutic approach based not only on our own experiences, but also on the experience of leading authorities in the subspecialty areas of ophthalmology. These individuals, through their research and clinical interests, develop a familiarity with a particular disease, or group of diseases, and often have a feeling for what will work and what will not. We are bringing together a distinguished faculty who will be discussing conditions in which they have a special interest. They have been asked to focus on clinical entities, important to the general ophthalmologist, and to emphasize two things: an updated fact about the condition, something new and important which has advanced our knowledge of the disease and a “pearl” of wisdom, an insight which they have found helpful in their own practices. The emphasis in this meeting will be on concise and to the point lectures. There will be ample time for questions and answers. The syllabus will also be targeted to emphasize the presentations. Each topic will be punctuated with an updated fact, and a “pearl” of ocular therapy. Educational Objectives After attending this conference participants should be able to:
